The One World Broadcasting Trust
continually seeks ways to set up new partnerships and expand its
existing projects. Here are some of the initiatives in which it is
currently involved, plus some earlier projects it has worked on:
Partnership with TVE
- View from the South
The Trust began working in partnership
with Television Trust for the Environment (TVE)
in 2005, on a project called MDGs in Focus (see below). After the success of this
project, the Trust began a new collaboration called a View from the
South. Like MDGs in Focus, the aim of this project is to enhance European public understanding of developing countries’ progress towards, and barriers to, achieving the
Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs). These goals are the UN's blueprint for international
development to which 189 countries signed up in 2000. Key activities of
a View from the South include:
MDG Fellowship Scheme
- A new scheme which supported 3-5 broadcasters in Europe to spend
time in the developing world exploring the Millennium Development Goals.
The aim was for these broadcasters to make a programme, or series of
programmes, about the goals.
International
Broadcasters' Conference - This
conference, which took place in Spring 2007, brought together over 35
senior broadcasters from around the world. The aim was to catalyse a
package of programmes looking at the Millennium Development Goals.
Partnership with TVE
- MDGs in Focus
The One World Broadcasting Trust began
collaborating with Television Trust for the Environment in 2005, with
the MDGs in Focus project. Among this project's activities and
achievements were:
MDGs in Focus Conference
- This meeting brought together 18 broadcasters from around the world to
look at how the media can become more engaged with issues surrounding
the Millennium Development Goals, and also to trigger new ideas for
programmes.
Element - One of
the outcomes of the MDGs in Focus conference, this is a new strand of
programmes on MTV European which covers global issues, and which is
aimed at the growing youth audience worldwide.
Research
The Trust has partnered with other
organisations to carry out research on the role of broadcasting in
increasing global understanding, and how
broadcasters cover issues that relate to the developing world. These
research reports include:
Reflecting the Real World
- this
report
looked at how UK broadcasters and audiences responded to a heightened
focus on the developing world, particularly Africa, during 2005. It was
carried out by a group of organisations led by the International
Broadcasting Trust, and including the One World Broadcasting Trust. The
link takes you to an external press release about the report.
Reflecting the Real World 2
- also led by the International Broadcasting Trust, this piece of
research again focussed on media representations of the developing
world, and also
conducted focus groups with young people, to
find out how they learn about events beyond their own borders.
